Temporal and spatial foraging patterns of three Asian honey bee species in Bangalore, India

چکیده
Honey bees (genus Apis) are important pollinators in Asian tropical agricultural and natural ecosystems, yet the species remain vastly understudied compared to European honey bee, Apis mellifera. We studied temporal spatial foraging patterns of three co-occurring bee Bangalore, India, gain a better understanding how they coexist. found evidence for resource partitioning, with cerana having activity peaks early mornings, florea initiating later day, dorsata potential do much its at night, even when moon is not up. Apart from established differences ranges, we limited partitioning landscape. Although individual colonies parallel often focused their effort on different patches, all preferred cultivated garden areas seminatural or urban areas. These observations add growing key role gardens as habitat cities.

The Evolution of Honey Bee Communication: Learning from Asian Species
Asian honey bees provide fascinating insights into the evolution of honey bee foraging communication. Although all honey bees use the waggle dance to communicate resource location, variations in the waggle dance and in the biology of Asian species have led to several different hypotheses about how and why this famous behavior evolved. In this review, my goal is to suggest areas of research and ...
متن کاملGenetic determinants of honey bee foraging behaviour
The amount of pollen stored in honey bee, Apis mellifera, colonies is a selectable trait. Five generations of two-way selection resulted in high and low strains that differed more than six-fold in quantities of stored pollen. Comparisons with hybrid crosses suggested that colony-level, high pollen-hoarding behaviour is inherited as a recessive trait. Colony levels of stored honey, however, show...

A study was conducted at the Eco-toxicology laboratory in the Department of Agricultural Entomology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, against three species Apis florea, A. dorsata and A. mellifera of honey bees, to check long-term surviv...
متن کاملInfluence of honey bee, Apis mellifera, hives and field size on foraging activity of native bee species in pumpkin fields.
The purpose of this study was to identify bee species active in pumpkin fields in New York and to estimate their potential as pollinators by examining their foraging activity. In addition, we examined whether foraging activity was affected by either the addition of hives of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., or by field size. Thirty-five pumpkin (Cucurbita spp.) fields ranging from 0.6 to 26.3 ...
متن کاملCollective Decision-Making in Honey Bee Foraging Dynamics
We consider a bee colony as dynamical system gathering information from an environment and adjusting its behaviour in accordance to it. Intelligent decisionmaking emerges from enhancing the level of communication among the individuals. Since the foragers communicate information about the environment to the nest, the latter means enhancing the coupling level of colony and environment. When indiv...
